Leak Detection, Meter Replacement, Monitoring, and Rate Structures

Water users can be divided into two basic groups; system users such as residential users, and system operators, such as the City. Water Conservation must be practiced by both types of groups.

Each type of user can choose from among many different water use efficiency practices, which fall into two categories:

Over the years the City has provided you with material and information to assist you in your efforts to conserve water. However, that is only half of the water conservation efforts in which the City has been engaged. The City has also been working to eliminate water waste in the system.

One way to detect leaks is to use listening equipment to survey the distribution system, identify leak sounds, and pinpoint the exact location of hidden underground leaks. This is one of the methods the City has been using for several years, as we aggressively work to eliminate leaks in the system. Each year money is spent on the leak detection program. Repairs of several lines have resulted in an enormous reduction in the amount of lost water in the past two years.

Another way of detecting leaks is the use of meters. unlike many cities, Yachats has had meters for many years. Some of the meters are old so the meter replacement program has been initiated.
